AMD

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease related to the aging of the central area of the retina called the macula. It results in a progressive loss of central vision in people over the age of 50. Central vision gradually deteriorates and a "scotoma" appears, a black spot that is projected onto the object being viewed. Like a camera with a blurred film, the centre of the visual field is blurred and all details are lost. Precise vision (especially reading, driving, face recognition) quickly becomes difficult or impossible.

Early detection of AMD is essential. Laser treatment or certain medications can stabilise the lesions. It is therefore important to treat the disease early on. Despite this, people with AMD can lead an independent life with the help of rehabilitation and visual aids.
